It was a techno-free zone on this week's show, but only because I ran out of time.

After playing quite a few of its tracks, I can now recommend the full Pharoahe Monch album 'Desire' to anyone looking for a hip hop album with a grander vision and scope than just banging beats and rhymes. We heard the three-part 'Trilogy' on today's show which has a particularly cinematic approach. The excellent Bamboos and friends 'compilation' side-project 'Black Feeling' is getting closer to release with the 12" release with versions of 'The Blessing Song' and 'Fire Eater'. For soul/gospel fans, this week's tip is Onitsha's 'Church Girl' album. Other artists with forthcoming albums showing early promise include Chrisette Michele (who sung the jazzy hooks in Nas' 'Can't Forget About You'), Sydney beat-don Katalyst and Italian jazz trio LTC.

Other tunes of note include Waajeed's tribute to James Brown, Marlena Shaw with an unreleased 1979 big band recording, Nu Tone with Talc with a fab and swinging twist on D&B and a surprising tune from the Chemical Brothers with ex-Pharcyde MC Fatlip, sounding both like the Neptunes and daisy-era De La Soul.
