STYLIN 362

Ben Lamdin last guested on Stylin in 2005 with a deep jazz DJ mix sent here from afar. This time, on his first visit to Australia, it was great to have him drop into the studio for a chat and some tunes. One of the things I was most keen to find out from Ben was what was happening with his label Impossible Ark. which gave us five quality jazz releases (including Max Grunhard's EP from Stylin Loves 2007), but which seems to have gone a little quiet of late. Well he answered that question in the best way possible, dropping a bunch of new cuts representing the label's second wave which should include a label compilation (with old and new tunes) and a Rhythmagic Orchestra album. We also had a taste of his new Tru Thoughts project with Keith and Julie Tippett (who some may remember as Julie Driscoll). Amongst all of these were some other very heavy jazz cuts which certainly give a look into what inspires him in the studio.

Oh yeah, I played a few tunes too. Lots of hip hop-oriented sounds to whet the appetites for the forthcoming albums from Q-Tip, Exile, Hygher Baby, PPP, Black Milk and Mayer Hawthorne. Also special mention for the opening tune from Zo aka La Chauve Souris, another great French beatmaker who seems to be a friend of our other French favourite Fulgeance.

Stylin broadcasts live each Friday on Australia's best known community station, 3RRR-FM Melbourne.
